Udyam Registration is the Government of India's official registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. It gives your business a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate that banks, government departments and buyers use to confirm your MSME status. Since 1 July 2020 it has replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) and EM-II registrations. The most important thing to know up front: Udyam Registration is free. Under the Ministry of MSME's notification, "there will be no fee for filing Udyam Registration", and the official portal repeatedly warns businesses to beware of fake sites that charge for it. This guide walks through who should register, what you need, each step on the official portal, and how to keep your registration current.
In this guide
1. Who Should Register and Why It Matters
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing or services that falls within the MSME limits can register, whether it is a proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company, HUF, cooperative, society or trust. Since 1 April 2025 the limits are: • Micro: investment in plant and machinery or equipment up to ₹2.5 Crore and turnover up to ₹10 Crore • Small: investment up to ₹25 Crore and turnover up to ₹100 Crore • Medium: investment up to ₹125 Crore and turnover up to ₹500 Crore Retail and wholesale traders can also register on the Udyam portal, but under the Ministry of MSME's Office Memorandum of 2 July 2021 this is for the limited purpose of priority sector lending by banks. The Udyam certificate is the gateway document for most central MSME programmes. RBI has told banks to rely on the classification recorded in the Udyam Registration Certificate when classifying loans to MSMEs under priority sector lending.
- Credit guarantee cover under CGTMSE for eligible micro and small enterprises (the lender applies for the cover).
- Protection against delayed payments for micro and small suppliers under the MSMED Act, 2006, including the MSME ODR portal for claims.
- Benefits under the Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises when selling to central government buyers.
- Eligibility for many central and state schemes, which usually ask for a valid Udyam number.
2. What You Need Before You Start
Registration is fully online, paperless and based on self-declaration. You do not upload documents, certificates or proof. What you do need is:
- Aadhaar number: of the proprietor (proprietorship), the managing partner (partnership firm) or the karta (HUF). For a company, LLP, cooperative society, society or trust, the authorised signatory provides their Aadhaar along with the organisation's PAN and GSTIN.
- Mobile number linked to that Aadhaar, because the portal verifies it by OTP.
- PAN of the enterprise. PAN and GSTIN became mandatory from 1 April 2021 (GSTIN where it is required under the CGST Act).
- Basic business details: registered name, office and plant or unit addresses, date of commencement, bank account and IFSC, main activity and the NIC codes that describe what you make or the service you provide, and number of employees.
- Investment and turnover figures. These are linked to your Income Tax Return and GST data, and the portal draws on government databases for them.
3. Step-by-Step: Registering on the Official Portal
Always start at udyamregistration.gov.in. The steps below describe the process on that portal. Step 1: Open the portal and choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered as an MSME. If you hold an old UAM, there is a separate option for existing UAM holders. Step 2: Enter the Aadhaar number and the name exactly as it appears on Aadhaar, give consent, and validate using the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. Step 3: Select your type of organisation and enter the PAN. The portal validates PAN against government records and fetches the related ITR and GST details where available. Step 4: Fill in the enterprise details: name, units and locations, official address, dates, bank details, major activity (manufacturing or services), NIC codes, employee numbers, and investment and turnover. You also declare the social category of the owner. The Ministry of MSME has clarified that disclosing SC/ST/women ownership is mandatory, and it matters for the procurement sub-targets. Step 5: The form also offers optional links to the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and TReDS platforms. You can opt in here if you plan to sell to government buyers or discount invoices. Step 6: Review everything, accept the declaration, and submit with a final OTP. You get a Udyam Registration Number, and the e-certificate is issued once the process is complete.
- Only one Udyam registration is allowed per enterprise. Several activities, including manufacturing and services together, can be listed under that one registration.
- All GSTINs listed against the same PAN are treated as one enterprise. Their investment and turnover are added together to decide the category.
- There is no renewal. The registration stays valid, but it must be kept updated (see section 5).
4. No PAN or GSTIN? The Udyam Assist Platform
Many very small businesses are not required to file GST returns and may not have the documents the main portal asks for. For them, the Ministry of MSME launched the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP). According to RBI, UAP is meant for Informal Micro Enterprises, which are businesses exempt from filing returns under the CGST Act on the basis of their turnover. It is managed by SIDBI, and registration is done with the help of Designated Agencies, which are RBI-regulated entities such as scheduled commercial banks and NBFCs. The Udyam Assist Certificate is treated at par with the Udyam Registration Certificate for priority sector lending, and holders are treated as micro enterprises for that purpose. For other schemes, check whether the scheme accepts the Udyam Assist Certificate. If you cannot register for another reason, such as not having an Aadhaar number, the notification says you can approach a Single Window facilitation point. These include the Ministry of MSME's Champions Control Rooms, the MSME Development Institutes and the District Industries Centre (DIC) in your district.
5. After Registration: Updates, Reclassification and Accuracy
Udyam is self-declared, but it is not "register once and forget". Under the notification:
- You must update your information online, including ITR and GST return details for the previous financial year, on self-declaration basis. If you don't update within the period the portal specifies, your status can be suspended.
- The Ministry updates your category using what you file and what it gathers from government sources such as ITR and GST returns, and it sends a communication when your category changes.
- If you move up a category, the Ministry's October 2022 amendment lets you keep the non-tax benefits of your earlier category for three years from the date of the upward change.
- Deliberately misrepresenting or suppressing self-declared facts can attract a penalty under section 27 of the MSMED Act. On a complaint, the General Manager of the District Industries Centre can inquire, and the certificate can be amended or recommended for cancellation.
6. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems with Udyam certificates come from details that do not match the business's tax records or its actual activity. Banks and procuring departments do look at the certificate closely.
- Paying a "registration fee" to a look-alike website. The official portal is free and says so on its home page.
- Choosing NIC codes that don't match what you actually make or sell. Lenders and scheme officers compare these with your GST registration and invoices.
- Registering twice for the same PAN, for example once per branch. Add units and activities to the existing registration instead.
- Declaring investment or turnover figures that differ from your ITR or GST data.
- Registering as a trader and assuming procurement or delayed-payment benefits apply. Traders' Udyam registration is for priority sector lending only.
Key takeaways
- Udyam Registration is free, online and paperless on udyamregistration.gov.in. Anyone charging a government fee for it is not the official portal.
- You need an Aadhaar (with linked mobile), the enterprise PAN, and GSTIN where GST applies. No documents are uploaded.
- Since 1 April 2025, micro means investment up to ₹2.5 Crore and turnover up to ₹10 Crore; small is ₹25 Crore / ₹100 Crore; medium is ₹125 Crore / ₹500 Crore.
- One enterprise (one PAN) gets one registration. Keep it updated with ITR and GST details every year to avoid suspension.
- Businesses without PAN or GSTIN can use the Udyam Assist Platform through a bank or NBFC acting as a Designated Agency.
Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam Registration really free?
Yes. The Ministry of MSME's notification states there is no fee for filing Udyam Registration, and the official portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) warns businesses about fake sites. If an adviser charges you, it should be for their own help, never as a government fee.
What documents are required for Udyam Registration?
None are uploaded. You need the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory (with an Aadhaar-linked mobile for OTP), the enterprise's PAN, and GSTIN where GST registration applies. Investment and turnover are linked to your ITR and GST data.
Does the Udyam certificate need to be renewed?
No, there is no renewal. However, you must update your information on the portal, including previous-year ITR and GST details, within the period the portal specifies. Otherwise your status can be suspended.
Can I have more than one Udyam registration for different businesses?
One enterprise can have only one Udyam registration, but any number of activities, including manufacturing and services together, can be added to it. All GSTINs under the same PAN count as one enterprise, and their figures are added together for classification.
Can traders get Udyam Registration?
Yes. Retail and wholesale traders can register, but under the Ministry of MSME's Office Memorandum of 2 July 2021 this is only for priority sector lending. Traders are not eligible for benefits under the Public Procurement Policy for MSEs.
I had an Udyog Aadhaar (UAM). Is it still valid?
No. Existing EM-II and UAM holders were required to re-register on the Udyam portal, which has a separate option for UAM holders. The Ministry has said UAM certificates remained valid only until 31 March 2022.
